It Can Happen Here: Oil Rig Helicopter Crashes
Posted in Helicopter Accidents on September 8, 2015
In Nigeria, a helicopter leaving an oil rig crashed into a lagoon, killing six passengers. The helicopter is owned by a Houston, Texas-based company that charters helicopters to oil and gas companies. There were six additional passengers on the helicopter who were taken to the hospital for injuries. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. A witness claims that they saw the helicopter smoking and turning before it hit the water.
Because the helicopter crashed into the water, a team of divers assisted with search and rescue efforts. Rescue teams initially rescued the six survivors and four of the deceased passengers. When they were alerted that there were two additional individuals on the helicopter when it crashed, divers swam down to the sunken helicopter to recover the bodies of the pilot and co-pilot. One of the divers said that the rescue was “very hard work.” Several of the divers had cuts and bruises on their bodies as a result of the rescue operation.
Sadly, helicopter accidents are more common than most people realize. Another example recently in the news: a US military helicopter crashed off the coast of Japan, injuring six.
While some accidents simply cannot be prevented, even by the most seasoned and careful helicopter pilots, others are due to negligence, including negligent maintenance, negligent manufacturing, and negligent operation. If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a helicopter accident or crash, it is important to hire an attorney with extensive experience working these types of cases. The right lawyer can make all the difference in getting you the compensation you deserve.
